DMIC Mentoring 19/8/19

Miss Ashley wants to buy a new heater because her house is really cold in winter. She looks up the specials at different shops and tries to buy the cheapest heater she can find. The Warehouse have a heater that is $69.99 but it is on sale for 30% off. Kmart has a heater for $45.00, but it is only 10% off. Which heater cheaper and by how much?







We selected one group to present the 'first part' of their solution, which was finding 10% of $45. All the groups did this first, as 10% is easier to find than 30%.
Their explanation started off well, but one group member wrote something that wasn't on the group paper and the rest of the group didn't know what to say about or how to explain it. We had to help out a little bit so help them explain that 10% of $45 is $4.50.


We were running out of time, so instead of a second group presenting the 'other part', I got up and facilitated it with the group. The way I wrote out the 3 lots of 10% (therefore 3 lots of 6.99) helped the students to understand where the 30% went. 


Again we restated the key idea in the same written way to help them connect between the two parts.


Together we worked out what 20% would be, as a way of practising the skill we had just learnt (adding 10%'s together until you get to 20 or 30%)


To challenge the children who really understood it, I made up another heater situation that was $84.99 at Bunnings but it was 40% off. And the students helped me to solve (i.e. they said it out loud, all I did was write it down). In the end we compared the three prices and were able to find out which heater was cheaper.

DMIC observation

Today I had my latest observation/mentoring session from Don.
We are learning the DMIC way of teaching maths.

Today for the session, I had my lower half of the class working on this problem. 
The following 4 photos are the 4 groups attempts to solve the problem.

This groups first attempt is the crossed out bit in the bottom left hand corner. They shared equally between Josh and Mele, but got stuck when they realised that Josh had $4 and Mele had $5. Knowing that they should have the same amount, they crossed this out and tried again next to it. The resilience here is awesome. They used the same strategy on the right hand side to solve the second part of the question.

I liked this groups approach to the second part of the question. You can see in the bottom left hand corner, one group member started drawing 17 stick people. The group then discussed and decided that's not what the 17 means, so decided to cross it out. Above this they drew 4 people and equally shared the 17 people as best they could. (Note the first stick person has $5, whereas the others have $4).

This group first split the $9, into 3 lots of $9. They gave $2 to each smiley face, and then split the last $3 into 3x $1. They gave $1 to each smiley face, leaving $1 left over which they split into 2x 50c, and then shared these. 
For the second part of the question, they drew the 4 faces, but didn't get far enough to solve this part.

This group started breaking up the $9 and $17 into smaller numbers which were more manageable, but weren't really sure what to do with them. 

This is how the group (with the pink smiley faces on their paper) shared their explanation. It was awesome to see typically quiet students being able to stand in front of the class and clearly explain part of the problem. This is a big social phobia for some kids, so for them to do this so confidently was a huge achievement. 

At this point Don encouraged me to sort of take over a little, and facilitate the second groups sharing. I had asked the second group (the ones that wrote in green felt) to share the second part (1/4 of $17). Because of time factors, and considering how long the kids take to present, it was better for me to do it.
I asked the same child (call him J) who drew the above diagram, to draw 4 circles to represent the 4 people. Then we stopped and talked (altogether) about how we could try the same thing the pink group did, and split the $17 into a number that is more easily divisible into 4 groups. So they came up with 4x4=16, and I asked 'J' to write the number 4 in each box. Next we talked about how we could split the leftover $1. We had established with the pink group that half of $1 is 50c, so now we needed to work out quarter of $1. The students offered different answers - 10c, 15c etc. We checked these using skip counting and repeated addition,  but they didn't add up to 100 cents. Finally we got 25 cents. So each person gets 4.25.


Our connect and generalise was driven by me - at first I thought maybe if we can just understand the fractions of $1, that would be awesome for today. So we did that. 
We had established through our problem solving that 1/2 was 50c, 1/4 was 25c and $1 = 100 cents. 
I challenge the kids to think what might 1/5 of $1 be.. 
eventually we figured out 20c. Same for 1/10. 
So I made it even harder, what might 1/20 be..
At this stage I circled the 1/2and 1/4, and circled the 1/5 and 1/10, and asked them to think about halves and doubles.  This helped them to see that if 1/10 of $1 was 10, 1/20 would be 5c, because 5 is half of 10. 


Then one student offered her ideas that we could use times tables. I never thought this group would have realised that. I was quite happy with them realising the fractions of $1. So we looked for patterns and were able to record the times tables that went with each one. 

Overall it was a really good lesson. 
Things for me to work on 
- facilitating as a group instead of a 2nd or 3rd group presenting. It kept the kids engaged way more and we spent less time waiting for kids to draw stick people.
- sitting with the group before they present and rehearsing what they are going to say. Don modelled this with the pink group, who were able to present really well because they had practised with an adult. Don revoiced some of what they said (E.g. "we split the other 3 and got 50c" became "we split the last $3 into $1, $1 and $1, then gave $1 to each person and split the last $1 into two, so they got 50c). I had always been hesitant to do this, as I felt it took away from the kids thinking by revoicing and making them rehearse. But it worked really well, so this is something I will try.

Keynote 1 - Once upon our time


What is the climax of my story? What is my conflict? Where will I end up?

At the end of the day, our job is about learning. We need to innovate. It is our job. 
Enemies of innovation - fear, time, curriculum. 
Our weapons - vision, community, stories.


There are people who watch things happen, people who make things happen, and people who say 'oh what happened?'. Which one will you be?

Session 1 - Rethinking the way you teach: Planning for the learner not the learning



After speaking at length about how amazing the NZ curriculum is, he pointed this out...
The NZ curriculum is split into 3 parts - values, key comps and learning areas. They take up about 16-17 pages EACH in the curriculum document. Yet, you can either download the entire curriculum, or the learning areas. In fact, the learning areas in 3 different ways. But you can't get the values or key comps on their own.. so in fact, are they equal? Apparently not...

Are you teaching WHAT, WHO or WHY?


Behaviour vs. Skills - which one are you born with and which do you develop? Which therefore should be the teachers focus?
How do these relate to content knowledge?

Why do we only ever plan for C -
When we plan we get out the curriculum documents... we look only at learning areas. Sometimes we put key competencies in to 'check a box' but is not the driver of learning decisions. 

Challenge  - go through your planning and highlight using 3 colours, any skill, any behaviour, or any content knowledge. Are they equal?
 Bring up a piece of planning - my example here. There is ZERO key competencies, values, skills and behaviours. Only content... So what is being valued?

 
Are we planning for vision? The NZC vision? What about school vision? 

Are we planning for...?
  • Checks personal comprehension for instruction and material. Requests further information if needed. Tells the teacher what they don't understand
  • Seeks reasons for aspects of the work at hand.
  • Plans a general strategy before starting.
  • Anticipates and predicts possible outcomes.
  • Checks teacher's work for errors; offers corrections.
  • Offers or seeks links between: different activities and ideas; different topics or subjects; schoolwork and personal life
  • Searches for weaknesses in their own understandings; checks the consistency of their explanations across different situations.
  • Suggests new activities and alternative procedures.
  • Challenges the text or an answer the teacher sanctions as correct.
  • Offers ideas, new insights and alternative explanation
  • Justifies opinions.
  • Reacts and refers to comments of other students.

"Literacy, innovation and equity are not add-ons, they are the business of education now!"



Keynote 1 - The relevant teacher


don't wait for your school to change - lead the change. 
The relevant teacher...
  1. Knows their role is different than it was in the past.
  2. Has gotten over themselves and their content. (asks themselves, is this knowledge important outside the classroom?)
  3. Not afraid of access to information (not asking their students Google-able information - they don't need you for that).
  4. Allowing students to use their devices on their exams (keeps working at school aligned with working as an adult).
  5. Meeting students where their at (not just learning wise, but socially as well - meeting students on Youtube, Twitter etc).
  6. Know a bit about branding and design - creating themselves as artists
  7. Reading books (E.g. Drive by Daniel Pink).
  8. Incorporate autonomy, mastery and purpose into their programme. 
  9. Putting ownership of learning back to students. 
  10. Encourage students to be their own finder and meaning maker - not relying on teacher to answer every question. (see video)
  11. Can think of something that they could get rid of from their programme.
  12. Embrace the 'side-quest'.
  13. Are no longer accepting junk, because they know something about design.
  14. Have super powers - can take ANYTHING, and use it for learning.
  15. Embrace interruptions (E.g. field trips, guest speakers etc). 

When teachers say 'my students are addicted to technology', they aren't. They are just choosing technology over the thing we went them to choose.

How am I being relevant?
I like that I include opportunities for students to create - not a specific thing to create, but create whatever they want to show their learning with whoever they want to show it with. They have choices. 

How do you stay relevant?
Be a learner.
Growth and change.

It might be uncomfortable to be the relevant teacher, but it will never be more uncomfortable than being a student who has an irrelevant teacher.

Tips for writing
  • colour code on your plan - red is death, blue is a good step, green is beginning and end.
  • make sure each question is required
  • maybe when modelling, start by using a video. It will help the kids understand the setting and hook them into the reading/clicking.
  • Don't forget when you die, or at the end, to put in a 'you died, would you like to try again' section.

Session 2 - Classroom Management in a Personalized Learning Environment

    1. key words - customised pathways, student ownerships, application, personal connections,  competency-based-progressions
    2. thoughts as we go - competency based progressions imply that our 'normal' system is hidden and not competency based, I disagree. how can you have 30 kids all doing different things at different times in the same single-cell classroom, wouldn't you be limited physically by the space? 
    3. my questions - what if you are in a single-cell class, does it run the same? how would you plan for this with 30 kids? what about other timetable-y things like kiwi-can, kiwi-sport, library, music etc, those would interrupt wouldn't they? they can learn wherever they are, but will still be judged/assessed/reported on based on their age. how does that work?

Writing Inquiry (T4 2017)


This slide deck is my writing inquiry for Term 4 2017. Although I had previously been compiling reflections and evidence through my blog, I had to change as our school had to send our inquiries to ERO and they wanted everyone to do it the same way.

Each week we documented, reflected upon and had evidence for what we did.

 Lopiseni hates writing. Maybe one out of every 5 writing sessions he will actually do any work. For him, I think he needs to work on confidence more than actual skill. He has skills, just refuses to use them.

Saia has made the biggest confidence shift out of all these kids. He can write 2-3 pages independently, brainstorm his ideas, reread his own work and check it. He has learnt new literacy skills and I can see he is trying to use them in his writing. 

Although only 3 students are 'at' for National Standards, I think they have all made progress towards achieving their goals, which were;

Write more than 5 sentences independently.
Use full stops, capital letters correctly without reminders.
Use speech marks and paragraphs correctly with limited support.
Remember to elaborate and give detail without T reminder.
Gain confidence - be able to write without 1:1 T support.

Things I think made the most difference to students
- Teaching them how to edit and make changes to their writing
- Getting them to talk about their ideas first, then write independently, then check with a buddy.

Things students think made the most difference to their learning
- specifically showing how to use dialogue (Stanley)
- writing the words for me to copy and telling me the spelling (Paula - ESOL)
- teaching us new words in reading, then we can use them in writing (Ariki)
- buddy marking to make a story better - teaches us to look for mistakes in our own writing so we can fix our mistakes in our own writing (all)
- kids WANT to try little groups where they have different skills to focus on instead of whole class writing (all)
- kids WANT to do spelling next year to learn new words and how to spell them (all)

Things I think I could do better next time
- using visual aids for checklists or brainstorms
- having writing groups every week. A lot of the time we did whole class stuff, and I would pull these students down as a group. Maybe having set groups would have made more of a difference.

 Viliami's confidence has grown in Maths. He can use place value partitioning (most of the time) to solve add/sub problems. Although he is still well-below, he has made shifts this year whereas last year he didn't. A win is a win.

I believe all the students have made progress towards, or have achieved their goals, which were;

- Transfer skip counting knowledge to be able to use times tables.

- Memorise 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
- Learn to skip count in 3s, 4s and 6.s
- Use PV knowledge to solve problems. (PV partitioning)
- Be able to identify how many 1s, 10s, 100s and 1000s in a number.

Things I think made the most difference to students
- Maths clinics. Ottilie and I did clinics where students could sign up to attend the one they wanted. It helped us both to cater more to the needs of the students. Instead of both classes having a range of stages 4-7, we could have one class of stages 4-5 and the other of 6-7. We could do more targeted teaching at their level. This also helped them feel successful as they weren't always being outdone by the stage 6-7 kids.
- Having a focus on learning and memorising times tables.

Things students think made the most difference to their learning
- Learning times tables - buddies, bracelets, having it on the wall, practicing skip counting together, I tested them on times tables etc. In small group as well, where they were all at the same level.
- Kids liked being able to choose their own learning (cross-grouping).
- Saia knew that his next step was to learn division facts.

Things I think I could do better next time
- Maths groups instead of whole class. I definitely want to do cross-grouping again, it makes things a million times easier.
